‘Meditations’ is Wycliffe Stutchbury’s first Asian exhibition. A former furniture maker, Stutchbury explores the expressive beauty of wood—its narrative qualities, its responsiveness to environment, and its ability to show beauty in decay. His work reflects the tension between human intention and nature’s resistance, where tools impose form but the material pushes back through cracks, distortions, and imperfections.
For the artist, human error becomes meditative. He describes being pulled toward intuitive working, like stacking firewood, assembling delicate patchworks of texture and colour from ancient or fallen timbers. Raised in the South Downs and Suffolk coast, his work is deeply rooted in landscape. Stutchbury has received multiple awards, including recognition from the Crafts Council UK and a shortlist for the Loewe Craft Prize in 2018.
