‘Song’, ‘Ming’, and ‘Mountain’ interweaves three thematic pillars: the Song dynasty, the Ming dynasty, and the archetype of the ‘mountain’. Rather than presenting a chronological survey or a single narrative, the exhibition positions each theme as an equal lens through which to understand Chinese art and culture, allowing for dialogue and discovery across sections. The Song dynasty (960–1279) section explores the ethos of the literati—how art is an expression of personal cultivation and philosophical depth, with a focus on material mastery and form. Highlights include a yellow jade phoenix and a perfectly formed jade bowl from the renowned Sakamoto Gorō collection.
