‘The Experience of Looking’ invites viewers to slow down and engage deeply with art, moving beyond a cursory glance to a more contemplative experience. Drawing on historical perspectives—from the Song dynasty ideal of ‘spiritual communion’ (shenhui) to contemporary notions of ‘slow art’—the exhibition explores how meaning is created in the space between the artwork and the viewer. Nature serves as a central theme, with each artist interpreting organic forms such as rocks, roots, and waves to evoke personal reflection and intellectual discovery. Through photography, painting, ceramics, and mixed media, artists including Daniel Eskenazi, Hao Shiming, The Master of the Water, Pine and Stone Retreat, Shao Wenhuan, Wang Mansheng, and Zhao Meng offer works that reward sustained attention. The introduction challenges viewers to see not just with the eyes, but with the mind, suggesting that true understanding of art requires presence, patience, and a willingness to look beneath the surface.
