‘Collectors as Artists’ is the gallery’s first exhibition featuring contemporary Chinese art by artist who are also renowned collectors. The Master of Water, Pine and Stone Retreat brings a unique connoisseurship to his recent artistic practice, emphasizing process over outcome. Zeng Xiaojun, a noted painter and collector of Ming furniture, creates work of remarkable technical mastery, notably his 2010 contribution to Boston MFA’s Fresh Ink. Daniel Eskenazi of Eskenazi Ltd. reveals nature’s power through his photography. Zhao Meng’s ceramic sculptures, while from a different kind of collector, embody the literati spirit. This exhibition celebrates the enduring link between classical and modern traditions—bound by nature, refinement, and connoisseurship.
