‘Wang Mansheng: Mind Landscape’ is an exhibition of new works. Born in Taiyuan in 1962, Wang began studying calligraphy and painting at age seven. After graduating from Fudan University with a degree in classical literature, he spent over a decade producing documentaries on Chinese and Tibetan art for China Central Television before moving to New York in 1996, where he has since devoted himself fully to painting and calligraphy. The eleven works in the Mind Landscape (Xiongzhong qiube) series are neither copies of the past nor departures from it, but quiet evocations of imagined mountains—drawn from decades of travel and memory. Using handmade walnut ink mixed with traditional ink and acrylic, Wang achieves a restrained palette of grey and brown that emphasizes texture, depth, and atmosphere. Though deeply rooted in the literati tradition, his practice is marked by continual experimentation: painting on cardboard and leaves, making ink from walnuts, and fashioning brushes from reeds. For Wang, innovation and tradition are not opposites but companions.
